Treatment options for diabetic neuropathy

Diabetes is one of the most common causes of nerve pain. This underscores the importance of those with diabetes to properly manage their problem to lessen risk of serious complications. For those with diabetes, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial. This includes eliminating alcohol and smoking.

Symptoms of neuropathy can include:

  • Numbness, tingling or burning sensation
  • A jabbing or throbbing pain
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Muscle weakness

Other complications associated with neuropathy can include skin problems, infections and falls from weakness in legs. Treating diabetic neuropathy pain can be challenging for the pain management specialist.

Treatment options can relate to the following:

  • FOOT CARE: Diabetes patients are at huge risk of circulatory problems with the feet. The person needs to watch out for cuts, blisters or any other type of sore on the feet which can worse quickly. A foot brace or orthotic may be recommended.

  • BLOOD SUGAR: Those with diabetes mush check and manage their blood sugar frequently.

  • WEIGHT: Diabetes patients cannot afford to be overweight as it compounds problems and increases risk of complications.

  • ORAL MEDICATIONS: These may help a patient manage their neuropathy and relieve some nerve pain. This can include topical creams that may be prescribed.

  • PHYSICAL THERAPY & EXERCISE: The pain management specialist may recommend therapy and exercise to improve muscle movement Electrical nerve stimulation.
